Like many American cities, the first inhabitants in the New York City area were the Native Americans, more specifically the Wappinger tribe. In 1524, Gionvanni da Verrazzano, an Italian explorer in service of the French crown, arrived.
The Dutch claimed the city as "New Amsterdam" in 1624 which eventually led to its current and most notorious name, "New York City", coined by the English in 1664.
Having one of the world's richest histories, New York City was stage to various battles of the American Revolutionary War, it served as capital of The United States until 1790, and is referred to as the Five Burroughs (a consolidated type of government which administers the constituent parts of the city). New York City has served as one of the biggest immigrant entry points for hundreds of years, enriching it with a diverse and colorful palette of world influences and cultures. |
